Refrigerators working-life estimate
The ice maker often fails while the cooling system keeps doing its real job. A $180 dispenser repair and a $1,400 compressor quote belong to the same refrigerator, yet they should lead to very different replacement decisions.
Our lifespan range assumes ordinary indoor use. A garage refrigerator in Texas can run through hot afternoons while dusty coils hold heat against it. I would weigh that workload and the door layout before treating a brand average as a personal forecast.
A well-kept machine in this category often works for about 12.5 years. Expensive failures become less surprising around year 9. Simpler models with good parts support can move toward 17 years, assuming installation has not spent the decade working against them.

French-door convenience collects a repair tax
Every extra refrigerator door adds another seal. Through-door ice then moves frozen water through a warmer section of the cabinet. Yale Appliance’s 2026 work places French-door refrigeration among its heavier service categories, with ice systems providing much of the nuisance.
A top-freezer model removes several of those parts. ENERGY STAR also says the layout tends to consume less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side designs. Nobody shows off the freezer door at dinner, but it may still be closing cleanly in year fourteen.

When a repair still makes sense
A door gasket or fan usually deserves a quote before the whole refrigerator is condemned. Defrost parts can also be reasonable. Compressor labour changes the calculation because an older freestanding machine may be worth less than the completed job.
Stable temperatures matter more than the birthday on the serial label. Check parts availability, then name a local technician willing to service the brand. I would stop funding an older machine when both answers are weak and cooling has become erratic.

Buy the service route before the touchscreen
Call two independent repair companies and ask whether they take the brand you are considering. A negative answer on Friday afternoon matters more than a glowing interface review when the refrigerator is warming a week of groceries.
Look for a replaceable door seal and an accessible water filter. Fewer doors reduce the number of leak paths. These features are dull on a showroom card, which is partly why I trust them.

First-year repair demand catches launch and installation trouble. Satisfaction reflects recent ownership. Our working-life estimate covers a much longer period, so none of these measurements quietly substitutes for another.
