Gas Burner Clicks but Will Not Light After Cleaning

The igniter clicks but one surface burner stays dark, often after the cooktop was cleaned or a pot boiled over.

Stop before the dangerous part

Never work live or bypass an interlock. Gas fittings, sealed refrigeration, fixed wiring and every microwave component behind the cabinet require qualified service.

A wet burner cap can click for minutes without producing a flame. A cap placed on the wrong base creates the same complaint after cleaning.

Gas smell changes the job completely. Leave the home and call the gas supplier or emergency services from outside rather than continuing a checklist.

Before you touch it

Checks that can change the diagnosis

  • Confirm every control is off and the surface is cool.
  • Stop immediately for gas odor or hissing.
  • Check whether the cap is wet, dirty or misplaced.
  • Look for food blocking a burner port.
  • Check Control Lock after a power interruption.

Try this in order

The safe troubleshooting sequence

01

Turn everything off

Wait until the cooktop is cool. Do not continue if gas is smelled.

02

Remove the documented pieces

Lift the grate and cap as the owner manual shows. Do not disturb an igniter wire, valve or gas fitting.

03

Wash the removable cap

Use mild soap and water, then dry it completely.

04

Clear supported burner ports

Use the tool permitted by the maker. Do not enlarge a port and do not leave a wooden toothpick inside it.

05

Seat the correct cap

Return it to its matching base. It should sit centered, flush and with little movement.

06

Test once

Disable Control Lock if needed and try the burner. Turn it off if ignition is not immediate and normal.

How you know the simple fix worked

A clean, dry and correctly seated burner should light evenly. The flame should not be persistently yellow, sooty or detached from the burner.

Technician territory

Stop the job when you see any of these

  • Any gas odor or hissing
  • A damaged igniter
  • Persistent clicking or a yellow sooty flame
  • Any adjustment to a valve, regulator, air shutter or gas connection

The claim can change the repair decision

Cleaning burner ports is maintenance. An igniter or control fault may be a covered repair, but gas-side work should always stay with a qualified technician. Federal warranty protections do not make every DIY mistake covered, and a paid service contract may require authorization before a part is replaced.

Common questions

The short answers

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave immediately. Do not operate switches or phones inside. Call the gas supplier or 911 from outside.

Can I enlarge a burner hole that looks blocked?

No. Clean only with the method in the model manual. Changing a port can alter combustion.
