A microwave door switch can be worth replacing, while a magnetron job may meet the price of a new countertop unit before labour arrives. The same symptom can therefore end in a $100 repair or a replacement box.
Built-in and over-the-range models change the arithmetic because removal has a cost. Trim kits can disappear from sale before the appliance fails. Replacing a $150 countertop unit does not require taking part of the kitchen apart.
A well-kept machine in this category often works for about 8.2 years. Expensive failures become less surprising around year 6. Simpler models with good parts support can move toward 10 years, assuming installation has not spent the decade working against them.

What tends to fail
Door interlocks take a small physical hit whenever the appliance closes. Turntable motors also wear. When the fan runs but food stays cold, the magnetron or its power circuit becomes a more credible suspect.
High-voltage components can retain a dangerous charge after the plug is removed. Internal diagnosis belongs with a trained technician. The cost of a professional visit is one reason basic countertop units are replaced so often.

Why Sharp and Panasonic appear so often
Sharp remains closely associated with microwave drawers. Yale Appliance’s 2026 report puts its first-year service rate below one call for every thirteen units sold in that regional sample. The result supports a shortlist, though it does not count drawer mechanisms at year ten.
Panasonic’s inverter design varies power instead of repeatedly switching full output. Gentle reheating can improve. That cooking advantage does not prove a longer working life, so we refuse to let one claim borrow the authority of the other.

The replacement trap
Matching trim kits can disappear before the microwave. Keep the cabinet opening dimensions with the model paperwork, preferably somewhere easier to find than the back of a mystery drawer.
Over-the-range buyers should compare ventilation airflow as carefully as heating performance. A weak hood remains a weak hood even when it reheats soup perfectly.
