Electric Dryer Tumbles but Has No Heat

The drum turns and air moves, but clothing stays cold or damp.

Stop before the dangerous part

Never work live or bypass an interlock. Gas fittings, sealed refrigeration, fixed wiring and every microwave component behind the cabinet require qualified service.

An electric dryer can run its motor while half of the 240-volt supply is missing. A no-heat cycle selection creates the same cold drum with a much cheaper explanation.

The breaker and airflow checks are the DIY boundary. Heating elements, thermal fuses and voltage measurements require cabinet access or live electrical testing.

Before you touch it

Checks that can change the diagnosis

  • Confirm a heated cycle is selected.
  • Clean the lint screen.
  • Check the exterior exhaust.
  • Reset both linked breaker poles once.
  • Confirm the washer spun the load properly.

Try this in order

The safe troubleshooting sequence

01

Choose a heated cycle

Use Timed Dry with heat rather than Air Fluff, No Heat or a wrinkle setting.

02

Clean the airflow path

Clean the lint screen and check that the exterior hood opens during a supervised test.

03

Reset both breaker poles

Turn the linked dryer breaker fully off, wait 30 seconds and restore it once.

04

Run a short test

Use a normal damp load and stop if the cabinet overheats or the breaker trips.

How you know the simple fix worked

Warm air should return during the test. Cold air after one correct reset and clear airflow points to a supply or internal heating fault.

Technician territory

Stop the job when you see any of these

  • A second breaker trip
  • A hot or damaged outlet
  • Any voltage measurement
  • Heating-element, thermal-fuse or internal-wiring access
  • Any gas-model troubleshooting

The claim can change the repair decision

Maintenance, a warrantyWritten warrantyA written promise supplied with the appliance sale. Federal law treats it as part of the product bargain rather than a separate paid plan. and a service contractService contractA separately purchased agreement that pays for stated maintenance or repair during a fixed period. Sales pages often call it an extended warranty. are different things.

A failed element or thermal fuse may be a covered mechanical part, while a household power-supply fault usually is not. A technician can separate the two without unsafe live testing at home. Federal warranty protections do not make every DIY mistake covered, and a paid service contract may require authorization before a part is replaced.

Common questions

The short answers

Why can an electric dryer run with no heat?

The motor and heater use different parts of the electrical supply. A partly tripped two-pole breaker can leave the drum turning without heater power.

Can I replace the thermal fuse myself?

This guide does not recommend cabinet removal or internal electrical work. A failed fuse can also signal an unresolved airflow problem.
