Dishwasher Not Draining: Filter, Hose and Air-Gap Checks

Standing water remains after the cycle, the machine smells stagnant, or a drain error appears.

Stop before the dangerous part

Never work live or bypass an interlock. Gas fittings, sealed refrigeration, fixed wiring and every microwave component behind the cabinet require qualified service.

A dishwasher pump can be perfectly healthy while a label fragment blocks the filter above it. The under-sink hose and disposal connection add two more places for water to stop.

Chemical drain opener is dangerous here. Anyone opening the filter later would meet corrosive liquid in a cramped space full of seals and metal parts.

Before you touch it

Checks that can change the diagnosis

  • Listen for humming or grinding.
  • Inspect the removable filter.
  • Look for a kinked under-sink hose.
  • Check the air gap and disposal connection.
  • For a new installation, confirm the disposal knockout was removed.

Try this in order

The safe troubleshooting sequence

01

Isolate water and power

Turn off the dishwasher breaker and close its water valve before reaching into standing water.

02

Remove the water

Use a cup, towels or a hand pump so the filter area is visible.

03

Clean the filter

Remove it as the manual shows. Use a soft brush and inspect the sump with gloves and a flashlight.

04

Stay above the pump

Remove a pump cover only when the owner manual explicitly provides the procedure. Stop at wiring or an inaccessible impeller.

05

Inspect the sink connection

Correct an obvious hose kink and clean an accessible air gap. Restore the documented high loop.

06

Test the drain

Reassemble, restore water and power, then run a short drain cycle while watching the under-sink connections.

How you know the simple fix worked

The sump should clear without grinding, leaking or returning water from the sink connection.

Technician territory

Stop the job when you see any of these

  • Glass or debris that cannot be safely removed
  • A pump that hums without moving water or stays silent
  • Visible wiring, repeated breaker trips or leaking hose connections
  • Any proposal to pour chemical drain opener into the machine

The claim can change the repair decision

Maintenance, a warrantyWritten warrantyA written promise supplied with the appliance sale. Federal law treats it as part of the product bargain rather than a separate paid plan. and a service contractService contractA separately purchased agreement that pays for stated maintenance or repair during a fixed period. Sales pages often call it an extended warranty. are different things.

A dirty filter or blocked disposal connection may be classed as maintenance or plumbing. A failed drain pump can be a mechanical repair, so record its sound before clearing the water. Federal warranty protections do not make every DIY mistake covered, and a paid service contract may require authorization before a part is replaced.

Common questions

The short answers

Can I put drain cleaner in a dishwasher?

No. It can damage components and leave corrosive liquid for whoever opens the drain path.

Is a little water below the filter normal?

Some models retain a small amount. Use the manual to distinguish normal sump water from standing water across the tub.
