Refrigerators
The ice maker often fails while the cooling system keeps doing its real job. A $180 dispenser repair and a $1,400 compressor quote belong to the same refrigerator, yet they should lead to very different replacement decisions.
The machine before the brand
An ice maker can fail while a refrigerator keeps cooling for years. A slow dryer may need a $15 vent cleaning rather than a new heater. We separate those nuisance jobs from the repair that makes replacement look sensible.
Each category carries its own working-life range and brand evidence. The number in the middle is a planning estimate, never a date stamped inside the cabinet.

ENERGY STAR puts a typical US household near 300 loads each year, roughly six every week. A ten-year washer can therefore pass about 3,000 cycles before the cabinet looks old enough to attract suspicion.
A healthy dryer can look exhausted when the duct behind it is partly blocked. Restricted airflow extends each cycle and traps heat inside the cabinet. The machine then works as though every load were a wet sleeping bag.
Standing water can come from a clogged filter or a kinked hose, each much cheaper than a failed drain pump. The puddle looks the same from the kitchen floor, which is why diagnosis matters more than the first symptom.
The steel oven box may stay sound after the control panel stops responding. A proprietary board can therefore decide the future of an otherwise usable range. I find that harder to accept than an igniter that simply wears out and can be replaced.
A microwave door switch can be worth replacing, while a magnetron job may meet the price of a new countertop unit before labour arrives. The same symptom can therefore end in a $100 repair or a replacement box.
How to read the range
The lower end marks the period when an expensive failure becomes less surprising. A simpler machine with good installation can continue toward the upper end, especially when parts remain available. I would rather show that spread than assign a confident funeral date.
Hard water can move a dishwasher left. A clean short vent may move a dryer right. Local labour can decide whether the same fault receives another repair or a replacement order.
Plain-English legal glossary
A written promise supplied with the appliance sale. Federal law treats it as part of the product bargain rather than a separate paid plan.
A separately purchased agreement that pays for stated maintenance or repair during a fixed period. Sales pages often call it an extended warranty.
Usually a residential service contract for named appliances or home systems. It does not replace homeowners insurance.
A contract that applicable state law classifies as insurance. The policy wording decides which risks it accepts and how much it can pay.
A sales-page label cannot settle the legal category. Read the contract, then check the law of the state where the plan is sold.
